Thurs., Jan 12th: The Different Types of Weathering

There are three major types of weathering: physical, chemical, and biological.

However, many times they are grouped into two: mechanical and chemical. Biological weathering can be both mechanical and chemical.

Definitions

  • Mechanical weathering– the breaking down of larger rock into smaller rocks. No chemical change to the rock. It is a physical change.
  • Chemical weathering– a chemical reaction occurs in the rock causing it to dissolve and form new substances. A chemical change.
  • Biological weathering– the breaking down of rock due to the actions of plants/animals. Some are chemical changes and some are physical changes.
