icg_physchemchangeposterWhat is a PHYSICAL CHANGE? What is a CHEMICAL CHANGE? (Also known as a chemical reaction.)

  • PHYSICAL CHANGES
    • Do not produce a new substance.
    • Material (matter) is the same before and after the change.
    • It may change state (liquid, solid, gas).
    • It may change size, shape, amount but
    • IT REMAINS THE SAME MATERIAL!
    • Physical changes can usually be undone.
  • CHEMICAL CHANGES
    • Produce a new substance.
    • A reaction happens and a new component is formed.
    • Substances present at the beginning of the change are NOT present at the end.
    • Cannot or are very difficult to undo!
