Class for Monday, October 29th

Dear Students,

My laryngitis hasn’t improved much and I’m feeling worse so I will be out on Monday. Here is a copy of the lesson plans that I am giving my substitute. Read this carefully as you will be expected to follow these instructions with the help of the sub.

I will try to be available for emails and comments on Google docs as you start working on this if I feel up to it.

PLANS

SUMMARY: Students will be doing an outside study based on one done by scientists.

  • They will present their INTRODUCTION, METHOD, FINDINGS, and SUMMARY in a Google Presentation.
  • Students will begin by writing up their INTRODUCTION and METHOD today using handouts of the study in their LAB section, a shared Google doc called Worming Their Way In, and a shared Google presentation with the main sections of the presentation already completed.

PROCEDURE

  1. Review Worming Their Way InStudy
    1. Students need to review this study done by scientists. We kind of started this together but I don’t think my A day kids actually got through it.
    2. Each student has a copy of the study in their SCIENCE NOTEBOOK LAB SECTION.
    3. Student groups should carefully read over each section: Thinking About the Environment, Introduction, Methods, Finding, and Discussion.
    4. I will also share a Google Presentation called Worming Their Way In Summary with each student. This is a good summary of this study done by different student groups.
  1. Worming Their Way In FACTivity Sheet– Students should have a handout of this sheet. I will also share this sheet with all students. Students should:
    1. FIRST- REVIEW the HANDOUT CAREFULLY and see what is expected of each group.
    2. Have one person in each group open this document in Google Docs.
    3. That one person should MAKE A COPY and then SHARE it with his/her group and Ms. Fitz. (It might work best if two students share a computer for viewing and answering questions.)
    4. Students should work together to answer the questions under the INTRODUCTION as completely as they can, discussing possible answers and then typing in the best answer.
    5. This section (THE INTRODUCTION) should not be assigned to one or two students. This is a combined group thinking activity.
  1. Google Presentation-After each group has reviewed the INTRODUCTION and METHOD to the study AND answered the INTRODUCTION questions cooperatively in the Google Document, they may now start working as a group to put information into the Google presentation.
    1. STUDENTS SHOULD NOT CHANGE THE COLOR AND BACKGROUND OF ANYTHING IN THE PRESENTATION!
    2. Have one person in each group open this document in Google Docs.
    3. That one person should MAKE A COPY and then SHARE it with his/her group and Ms. Fitz. (It might work best if two students share a computer for viewing and answering questions.)

If, by some miracle, students complete ALL of this during class, they may go to the QUIZLET site to practice vocabulary and concepts for their upcoming quiz.
